The eight kootas
Every one of the 36 points comes from one of these eight tests, and each is worth a different amount. Almost all of them are computed from the two Moons — their nakshatras and their rashis. That is why matching needs birth dates far more than it needs birth times.

What this number is and isn't
Ashtakoota is a traditional scoring convention, not a prediction. We show the arithmetic and let you read it. We will not tell you to call off a marriage over a number, and we do not sell remedies to raise one.
Why two kootas decide so much
Worth knowing before the number lands. Nadi carries 8 of the 36, and it scores zero whenever both partners share a nadi. So a couple can lose almost a quarter of the total on one test. Bhakoot works the same way at 7. That is why two people who match well on six kootas can still come out below 18. And why a low total describes a table, not a relationship.

What is kundli matching?
It is Ashtakoota, the eight-koota count out of 36 guna. Every point falls out of two numbers — where each person’s Moon sits, by nakshatra and by rashi. Nothing else goes into the score.
How many guna are needed for marriage?
The convention is 18 of 36, and it separates less than it is usually taken to. Across every possible pair of Moon positions, about two in three already reach 18. A number most pairings clear is a floor, not a filter.
What is Nadi dosha?
Nadi is the eighth koota, worth 8 of the 36, and it scores zero when both people share a nadi. Three nadis divide the 27 nakshatras nine each, so it zeroes for about a third of all pairings by the structure of the table.
Does kundli matching check Mangal Dosha?
Not inside the 36 guna. Ashtakoota reads the Moon’s nakshatra and rashi only, and Mangal (Mars) is nowhere in it. Mangal Dosha is a separate test, on [its own page](/mangal-dosha).
What does guna milan not look at?
The 7th house, its lord, Shukra (Venus), Mangal (Mars) and the dashas — which is most of what a practitioner would actually weigh for a marriage. A high score is not a verdict and a low one is not a prohibition.
