Zodiac
Why this may not be the moon sign you were told
Both zodiacs measure the same sky. They disagree about where zero sits. The tropical zodiac ties 0° Aries to the March equinox, so it tracks the seasons. The sidereal zodiac ties it to the fixed stars. The equinox drifts, so the two have separated by about 24°. Vedic astrology reads sidereal, which is why your rashi usually sits one sign earlier than a Western moon sign.
Neither is more accurate. Use sidereal if you read Vedic astrology, tropical if you read Western. The birth chart tool → runs the same engine without the ayanamsa applied.
Accuracy
Why the birth time still matters
The Moon covers roughly half a degree an hour. Across a full day it moves 12–15°, which is nearly half a sign. If the Moon changed sign on your birth day, the time decides which rashi you get. A date-only lookup simply guesses.
The nakshatra is tighter still. The Moon crosses one in about a day, and a pada in about six hours. That is why the form asks for your birth time. If your time is only approximate, your Moon sign is almost always still right. The pada is what an hour's error can change.
Rashi versus sun sign
Western astrology treats the Sun sign as the headline. Vedic astrology treats the Moon sign as primary. Daily rashifal, dasha periods and marriage matching are all keyed to the Moon, not the Sun. If you have been reading Western horoscopes by your Sun sign, the Vedic one is usually a different sign entirely.

What is a moon sign or rashi?
The sign the Moon was in when you were born. In Vedic astrology it is the reference point for most of the reading — the dasha is set from it, and transits are counted from it rather than from the Sun.
How do I find my rashi?
Enter your date, time and place of birth on this page. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so even an approximate time usually settles the sign, though the nakshatra inside it wants a closer one.
Is the rashi the same as a sun sign?
No. The rashi is the Moon’s sign and a sun sign is the Sun’s. They are different planets at different points, so they agree only by coincidence — which is why a newspaper horoscope and a Vedic reading so often disagree.
Why is my Vedic rashi one sign behind my Western sign?
The ayanamsa, which is the gap between the fixed stars and the equinox — currently about 24°. Vedic charts subtract it, so a placement near the start of a sign usually falls back into the one before.
Do I need a birth time to find my rashi?
Usually not for the sign itself. The Moon crosses a sign in about two and a quarter days, so a date is often enough — but it changes nakshatra every day or so, and the dasha is set from the nakshatra.
What is a nakshatra, and how is it related to the rashi?
The zodiac is divided twice over: into twelve rashis of 30°, and into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′. They do not line up, so nine nakshatras straddle a rashi boundary and knowing one does not always settle the other.
