How the reduction works
Letters are dropped, digits are summed, and the sum is reduced until one digit is left. Unless it lands on 11, 22 or 33, which are held.
- MH 12 AB 3456 → digits 1 2 3 4 5 6
- 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21
- 2 + 1 = 3
Note what this means. Any rearrangement of the same digits gives the same answer. A plate ending 6543 reduces exactly as one ending 3456. So two numbers a dealer prices very differently are identical under the method used to justify the price.
On paying extra for a "lucky" number
There is a real market in phone numbers and registration plates that reduce to a favoured digit, and prices climb steeply for them. Nothing in this arithmetic supports that premium. The sum of the digits of a phone number is a fact about the digits, not about what happens to you. Use it if you enjoy it; we would not spend money on it.
