Method
How it is calculated
Three inputs decide it: local sidereal time at your birth, your latitude, and the tilt of the ecliptic. Sidereal time comes from the exact UTC instant. That is why the timezone has to be resolved with the rules in force that year, not today's.
We verify the result rather than trust the formula. Our tests take the Ascendant we produce and convert it through a separate routine. It has to land on the horizon at altitude zero. We check at five latitudes, across the clock. Another check confirms we picked the rising point and not the setting one, which is an easy sign error to make. More on the method →

If you don't know your birth time
We will not give you a rising sign, because there is not one to give. Assuming noon produces a confident, specific, wrong answer. That is worse than no answer. Everything that does not depend on the time still works: planets, signs, aspects and nakshatras.
Birth certificates, hospital records and municipal registers usually carry the time. It is worth finding. The houses depend on it, and the houses are most of what a chart reading is about.

Questions people ask about the lagna
What is a rising sign or lagna?
The sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is the first house of the chart, and every other house is counted from it, which is why it decides so much of the layout.
How do I find my ascendant?
Enter your date, exact time and place of birth on this page. All three are needed: the lagna is measured against the horizon at one spot on Earth, at one instant.
Why does the lagna need an exact birth time?
Because it moves fast. The rising sign advances about one degree every four minutes, so it changes sign roughly every two hours. An hour out usually moves it a whole sign, and every house placement shifts with it.
What is the difference between the lagna, the rashi and the sun sign?
Three different points. The lagna is the sign on the eastern horizon, the rashi is the sign the Moon was in, and the sun sign is the sign the Sun was in. The last is the one newspaper columns use.
Why is my Vedic lagna different from the Western one?
The ayanamsa. Vedic charts measure from the fixed stars and Western ones from the equinox, and the two have drifted about 24° apart. So a sidereal lagna usually sits one sign back from the tropical one.
Can I find my lagna without a birth time?
No, and nothing here will guess one. Without a time the Ascendant and every house placement are left out rather than filled with a noon default, because a guessed lagna is wrong in a way the reader cannot see.
