Method
How it is calculated
Three inputs decide it: local sidereal time at your birth, your latitude, and the tilt of the ecliptic. Sidereal time comes from the exact UTC instant. That is why the timezone has to be resolved with the rules in force that year, not today's.
We verify the result rather than trust the formula. Our tests take the Ascendant we produce and convert it through a separate routine. It has to land on the horizon at altitude zero. We check at five latitudes, across the clock. Another check confirms we picked the rising point and not the setting one, which is an easy sign error to make. More on the method →

If you don't know your birth time
We will not give you a rising sign, because there is not one to give. Assuming noon produces a confident, specific, wrong answer. That is worse than no answer. Everything that does not depend on the time still works: planets, signs, aspects and nakshatras.
Birth certificates, hospital records and municipal registers usually carry the time. It is worth finding. The houses depend on it, and the houses are most of what a chart reading is about.
