Daylight in eight parts

From sunrise to sunset is 11h 26m, and the tradition divides it into eight equal parts of 1h 26m. Three of them are the ones to leave alone — which three depends on the weekday.

  • 17:11 AM – 8:37 AMKaalGulika — avoided for anything meant to last.Avoid
  • 28:37 AM – 10:03 AMShubhClear — open again, once Gulika is over.Favourable
  • 310:03 AM – 11:28 AMRogRahu Kaal — the strongest of the three — no new undertakings.Avoid
  • 411:28 AM – 12:54 PMUdvegClear — holds Abhijit muhurta, 12:31 PM – 1:17 PM, the best window of the day.Choghadiya rates this stretch Udveg, one it counts as a time to avoid. This row follows the eight parts of the day instead, and none of Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda or Gulika falls here.Favourable
  • 512:54 PM – 2:20 PMChalClear — nothing traditionally objects to this part.Favourable
  • 62:20 PM – 3:46 PMLabhYamaganda — avoided for beginnings and travel.Choghadiya rates this stretch Labh, which is favourable. It also falls in Yamaganda, and that is why this row says avoid.Avoid

Why the windows fall where they do →

Daylight is divided into eight and night into eight, separately. The two are rarely the same length. So a day window and a night window on the same date usually differ — here 1h 26m against 1h 34m.

The national era

Why is the panchang different for each city?

Tithi, nakshatra and yoga depend only on the instant, so their end times are the same worldwide. Everything anchored to sunrise is not. The Vedic day runs sunrise to sunrise, and sunrise depends on latitude and longitude. Two cities can sit on different tithis at the same clock time, and their Rahu Kaal will differ by more than an hour. A panchang without a place is not really a panchang.

Not reprinted from an almanac

Every figure on this page was computed for this date and these coordinates from an ephemeris, then checked against JPL Horizons. A printed panchang rounds to the nearest minute for a whole region. This one resolves to the second for one point. So small disagreements with a paper almanac are expected, and ours is the one you can check.
